The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed fining US Airways $395,850 for allegedly permitting hazardous materials on some of its flights without proper packaging and without notifying the airline’s pilots.

In inspections conducted in 2010 at US Airways’ facilities at Hartford?s Bradley International Airport, FAA says it found that the airline had accepted an undeclared shipment of 10 disposable cigarette lighters filled with flammable gas. The lighters were found in checked baggage belonging to a passenger.

The airline also “offered an improperly packaged shipment containing wet cell batteries filled with alkali, a corrosive, for transportation by air on a US Airways passenger-carrying flight,” according to a statement released by FAA on Thursday.

The inspection found violations on 12 flights to or from the Hartford airport between Feb. 26 and May 12, 2010.

FAA also alleges that US Airways pilots were not provided with the required information regarding 23 shipments of hazardous materials.

US Airways has yet to respond to a request for comment.

Home made green house projects can be loads of fun! Whether your project is for your school science fair, private entertainment, or the beginning of a brand new hobby, creating your own personal greenhouse projects can be an enjoyable investment of time.

Different Kinds of Home Made Garden Greenhouse Projects

The most enjoyable homemade green house gardening projects are made of materials it is likely you have in your home already. Glass and plastic containers, old flowerpots, milk containers, plastic sheeting, newspapers, and spray paint can be utilized in a variety of ways to create your own garden greenhouse projects.

Merely cutting an old milk jug or plastic jar to fit over a patio garden plant produces a handmade pop-up greenhouse which will help extend your growing season a bit or guard plants from earlier or later frosts.

Making an easy hoop and plastic sheeting home made green house can be finished utilizing older plastic PVC pipes, discarded metal tubes, or any other long flexible material you find accessible. Plastic sheeting are available in rolls for overall economy and then cut to length to fit your built garden greenhouse structure.

Interior home made green houses often include nothing but a bookcase wrapped in plastic sheeting with a light source installed. These shelf-unit garden greenhouses fit just about anywhere and are lightweight and easy to convert into other storage when not in use.

Some green house gardeners have crafted old flower pots, with a hole in the bottom protected by screening, to set upside-down growing berries or tomatoes in the bottom of the pot, while raising herbs or flowers in the top of the hanging basket. Also you can use old used two-liter bottles filled up with soil and mounted together to dangle in a line from a window curtain rod to craft your own window-greenhouse kit. You’ll want to safeguard the roots by covering the plastic bottles with used newspapers, heavy tape, or spray paint.

Homemade tabletop terrariums and outdoor buildings manufactured with water-filled bottles for skylights or walls created from old glass bottles are routine practices in some countries, and you may adopt one of these brilliant home made green house projects as both a cultural learning practical experience and a garden greenhouse gardening experiment. This type of homemade greenhouse project also works as a great lesson in recycling, which most schools now require.

Making your own homemade green house projects is a wonderful way to share your adoration of greenhouse gardening or start a new fulfilling hobby. Homemade projects are often completed with a little creativeness and a few items commonly found in the majority of homes. You can also buy homemade greenhouse project plans, guides, and sets to assist you in getting going on your new greenhouse gardening journey.

Sony might not have taken long to find a new date in the TV scene after breaking up with Samsung late last year: if you believe Nikkei, Panasonic is the belle of the ball. The two Japanese firms are reportedly hoping to speed up the development of cheap, mass-produced OLED TVs by sharing each other’s design techniques, including a Panasonic method for printing OLEDs on a scale that lets the company avoid $9,000 price tags. Neither Panasonic nor Sony has confirmed the talks, of course, and there’s no guarantee a partnership will emerge even if it truly gets hot and heavy. Still, if real, we’ll be on the lookout for a PanaSony OLED TV at CES in the future.

Panasonic, Sony purportedly entering into OLED TV team-up, torrid love affair originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 May 2012 17:51:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

goldrushshotThere’s been a lot of buzz about how important mobile apps are for years now, and an increasing number of tech startups are launching with mobile-only strategies. But a new study indicates that the sector still has a ways to go before it attracts significant money from a wide breadth of users. According to a recent study of US consumers conducted by ABI, some 70 percent of mobile app users spend “either nothing or very little” on or in applications. It turns out that, much like gambling or gaming, the mobile app market of today relies mostly big-spending “whales” to account for a bulk of its direct sales. The highest-spending three percent of all app users account for nearly 20 percent of the total spend in the market, ABI said.

Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s ‘Dark Shadows’ debuts at a distant #2.

The Avengers isn’t the only club to count Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the rest of the crew as members. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes joined the $1 billion club over the weekend, shattering more box-office records and collecting enough cash to put it just behind “Alice in Wonderland” on the all-time worldwide gross list. “Dark Shadows,” Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton’s first collaboration since “Alice,” settled for a distant #2 debut.

“The Avengers” reached the $1 billion mark as quickly as “Avatar” and the last “Harry Potter” movie, despite opening earlier overseas than in America. Marvel’s action-packed tentpole (which unites several of their heroes) already broke the all-time opening weekend record when it opened last weekend, and with its $103.2 million estimated domestic gross this weekend, “The Avengers” is now the record holder for the biggest second-weekend number too. Thanks to its $628.9 million 19-day international haul, “The Avengers” is now one of only 11 movies to climb past the $1 billion mark worldwide.

Marvel’s first movie under the Disney umbrella benefited from its comic book origins, repeat viewings, a positively reviewed story from director/co-writer Joss Whedon and the combined star power of folks like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. Truthfully, “Dark Shadows” never stood a chance. The eighth collaboration between Depp and Burton — a campy take on a decades-old low-budget vampire soap opera — made $28.8 million domestically during its first weekend in theaters. By comparison, Depp and Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” opened with $116.1 million two years ago.

“Think Like a Man,” which previously enjoyed two weekends atop the box office prior to the arrival of “The Avengers,” was #3 over the weekend with $6.3 million. Based on the self-help book from comedian Steve Harvey, “Think” has earned $81.9 million against a reported budget of just $12 million. “The Hunger Games” was #4 with $4.4 million, for a domestic total of $386.9 million. “The Lucky One” was #5 with $4.1 million for a $53.7 million total.

Fox Searchlight’s “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” did well with a modest expansion in theater counts, generating a healthy $2.7 million in 178 locations. “Girl in Progress” debuted with $1.4 million in 322 locations. Oscar winner “The Artist” went through one more expansion, in an apparent attempt to cash in on the Mother’s Day holiday, but failed to generate new buzz with a paltry $214 per screen average.

Next weekend, Sacha Baron Cohen will go up against “The Avengers” in his role as a fictitious world leader in “The Dictator.” The big-budget action flick “Battleship” will also arrive as well as a bit of counter-programming in the form of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” featuring an ensemble that includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks and Anna Kendrick.

Check out everything we’ve got on “Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Dark Shadows” and “The Hunger Games.”

The video offers researchers a very unusual opportunity to view the Cross River gorilla behaving normally.

The rarest gorilla on Earth, the elusive Cross River gorilla, has been caught on film by a hidden camera trap for the first time ever.

Researchers estimate that only about 250 to 300 of the gorillas remain on the planet, and humans have rarely observed these critically-endangered primates?in their natural habitat.

The two-minute footage shows eight of the gorillas making their way through a forest in Cameroon. The video offers a glimpse of classic gorilla behavior, yet also reveals the plight of the threatened apes.

“The footage provides us with our first tantalizing glimpses of Cross River gorillas behaving normally in their environment,” said Christopher Jameson, director of the Takamanda Mone Landscape Project. “A person can study these animals for years and never even catch a glimpse of the gorillas, much less see anything like this.”

In a movie-worthy moment (at about 1:10 in the video), a massive silverback gorilla suddenly races along the forest path, beating his chest.

Seconds later (at about 1:18), another gorilla lopes across the frame; the animal is missing a hand. The wound appears to be healed, but could have been caused by a hunter’s trap, according to a statement from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the group that captured the?rare gorilla video?with one of four camera traps set up in the Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary.

“Cross River gorillas occur in very low densities across their entire range, so the appearance of a possible snare injury is a reminder that continued law enforcement efforts are needed to prevent further injuries to gorillas in the sanctuary,” Liz Macfie, gorilla coordinator for WCS’s Species Program, said in a statement.

Although local people don’t hunt the gorillas directly, traps set for other forest animals can sometimes injure the apes.

Cross River gorillas are extremely shy, and typically flee at the first sight of humans. They are the rarest of the four gorilla subspecies, and live only in the mountain forests that straddle the border of Cameroon and Nigeria.
